Give us a hand in Sanahat, Yucatan, to create a space for the re-appropriation of our Maya culture, and to allow us to be resilient against adversities.
In U Yich Luum “Fruits of the Earth”, we work with boys and girls of the Sanahat, Yucatan community to discover nature through activities like the observation and identification of birds, using medicinal plants, sowing corn, and the revival of our ceremonies. We learn together and love and care for our territory.
“I like being in the workshops because I have fun, I learn new things, we observe birds and we also learn to sow and harvest.” Marisol, 13 years old.
“Although I live in the town, I never knew about the pumpkin, where the pepita that we eat toasted comes from.” Lorely, 10 years old.
Our learning space is in the open air under the shade of a tree. Although it is very pretty; the over 40 degrees centigrade heat in the dry season, the rains, and the cold in the winter often limit our activities.
With your help we will construct a house with Maya architecture that costs eighty thousand pesos ($4,000 USD); in which we can store our didactic materials, equipment, and hold safer and more consistent learning sessions. To do it, we need many palm leaves, thick wood for posts, hay, stones, and cement. We need to hire a construction expert so the structure is solid and safe, and so that it will last us many years.
We will all collaborate to make the garden beautiful for the children, and so that it’s comfortable. You can collaborate with us by contributing to buy the palms leaves, a post, or a bag of cement. All contributions are welcome, if you can’t donate cash, help us and share this message with your friends, colleagues, neighbors, and family
“Be a part of this project. Construct our space and reconstruct the Maya culture.” Donate from $50 pesos ($2.50 USD)
You can also come and do some volunteer work, in March of 2021, we will be building and all hands a very valuable! Come on, we’re waiting for you! One way or another, we will be sharing photos of the advancements and the final result to all collaborators.
U Yich Luum is a group of Maya professionals whom, since 2015, have decided to look after its community and work for a better way of life. We are legally established and we have various projects with children, women, and young people, specializing in agroecology, community learning, territories, gender, and human rights
Our main project is the construction of a comprehensive agroecological center where we currently produce food in gardens, harvest corn, and breed birds and native pigs. We need a kitchen space, bathrooms, and a house for meetings and workshops. It’s the next step and with your support we will have it soon
Before the adverse situations that we face; like the COVID 19 pandemic, the impact of hurricanes, and the economic crisis, it is urgent that we return to our roots. It’s just the beginning of something big, and you can be another member of this great team.
Together we are more resilient.
