To acquire corn to cover the food consumption of Mayan families for three months so that they can restore their food autonomy affected by the pandemic, tropical storms and hurricanes.
This year 2020 has been a very difficult year for the Mayan families in the eastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula due to: 1) Unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Riviera Maya which was their main source of work. 2) The aftermath of the tropical storms "Cristobal" and Gamma, and hurricanes Delta and Zeta that caused serious flooding, loss of crops and seeds in the milpa as well as some backyard animals.
The Mayan families explained to us that their situation will be more critical during January and February 2021 because they have lost all of this year's harvest and they will not have corn at the beginning of next year. We want to help by buying corn for the neediest Mayan families since it is the basis of their diet. In this way we can avoid that they are forced to consume the few animals they had left as their production and sale in the region represents the family income.
How to help?
There is no small contribution. For every US $33 collected it is possible to cover the monthly consumption of corn for a family of 5 members. We detected about 554 Mayan families that were badly affected, and identified the 60 most vulnerable which are the highest priority. We hope to exceed the goal so we can guarantee corn for more families.
