Defending human rights in the Yucatán Peninsula

Mexico is a country where inequality and violence towards vulnerable groups, land defenders and human rights defenders persist, and the Yucatan Peninsula is no exception. Our region is marked by serious threats that affect the people who live there, their territories and their way of life.  

As young people, we want to see a different future. One where justice, equity and dignity flourish in abundance, and we know that by getting involved we can be part of the solution and start building the future we desire.

For 5 years Kanan Derechos Humanos (Human Rights) has been an organization in which young people build networks and seek to occupy a space in the defense of human rights in our region. We defend the rights of the inhabitants of the Yucatan Peninsula through legal assistance and the strengthening of the social fabric. 

Today, we need your help to continue transforming the realities in the Peninsula and to continue building a fairer region.

With your contribution we will be able to continue forming networks through which we accompany legal cases, generate content to document these cases and share what is going on in the region, as well as working on grassroots initiatives with communities and collectives.

Why is your support important?

The Yucatan Peninsula faces serious challenges: 

- The advance of extractive megaprojects dispossesses and contaminates Mayan territories. 
- Human rights defenders are persecuted and repressed.
- Vulnerable groups, such as the LGBTQ+ population, people with disabilities and women, face systematic violence and discrimination.

Kanan Human Rights, a team of committed young people, works to transform these realities. We support vulnerable communities, promote legal actions and carry out communication campaigns to make the struggles in the Yucatan Peninsula visible.

Who we are

We are Roberto, Miguel, Vero, Tere and Martín, a team of diverse and committed young people who, from our passions and concerns, seek to promote human rights in the Yucatán Peninsula and transform the structures of inequality and injustice in the region.

Five years ago we founded Kanan Derechos Humanos with the vision of building a space where young people like us could grow, learn and fight for justice. We have worked with individuals and collectives from Chapab de las Flores, Sitilpech, Samahil, Ixil, Kinchil, El Cuyo, Chocholá, Mocochá, and Mérida, all in the Yucatán Peninsula. Through our work we promote legal actions, grassroots initiatives, community support, communication strategies and liaison with national and international organizations.

Our achievements include advising on cases of gender violence, accompanying legal struggles for a healthy environment and documenting processes of environmental racism. On the other hand, we have collaborated with collectives and individuals fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities. 

We believe that by joining forces and creating networks we can build a more sustainable, equal and just future for all.
