Five years after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico has once again been ravaged by a destructive hurricane - this time Hurricane Fiona. The Category 1 storm, compounded with ongoing issues to provide basic services and a crumbling infrastructure, brought an island-wide power outage and intense rain leading to landslides that have broken roads, bridges, homes, and buildings. Two-thirds of Puerto Ricans are without water and almost 2,000 people have sought protection in shelters.

In the Dominican Republic, Hurricane Fiona struck through the eastern part of the island, a popular region for the country’s tourism industry. These unprecedented conditions left about 1 million people without running water and over 700,000 without power.

These natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change, have once again demonstrated heartbreaking levels of destruction.

At HIP, our focus is to help these communities gain access to basic needs in the immediate aftermath of the storm. We’re committed to supporting the islands in recovering from these catastrophic storms.

In response to Hurricane Fiona, HIP is seeding the Fiona Response Fund with $50k and will be working in collaboration with the Hispanic Federation, Community Foundation of Puerto Rico, the Fiona Community Response Fund, and Dominican Republic-based organizations. We invite you to join HIP in supporting our comunidades in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic by making a contribution. Your support will strengthen our ability to rapidly respond directly to the needs of the people most affected by this recent disaster.
