In the season of giving, be hip and give to HIPGive!
By Mario Leiva, HIPGive contributor
This year on #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving, HIPGive raised a record-breaking $250,000 in our crowdfunding competition, #LatinosGive!
The Latino spirit of support was definitely demonstrated, and we are full of joy and gratitude for being part of such an incredible movement.
Here are the (rather impressive) stats:
#LatinoGive resulted in
- 1,090 individual donors
- 1,251 of individual gifts
- Over $200,000 in individual donations
- $50,000 in matching funds
Raising over $250,000 on #GivingTuesday!
Curious about where all that money went?
Here are a few of the incredible projects:
1. “Transportation to Education” reached 100% of their goal
The project will purchase a passenger van to provide educational field trips for inner-city and undocumented, unaccompanied, and refugee students of Casa Libre (Freedom House), a shelter for homeless children in Los Angeles, CA.
2. “Beat Cervical Cancer in Guatemala” reached an incredible 147% of their goal
WINGS cervical cancer prevention will provide life-saving cervical cancer screenings to 500 rural, at-risk women in underserved areas of Guatemala.
3. “Home Sweet Home. More Education, Less Migration” reached an outstanding 194% of their goal
INCEDES provides a $1/day scholarship for K to 12 students that includes education fees, healthcare, hygiene, and nutrition. And not only that; 5% is matched in a savings account in their name, to promote financial responsibility and to invest in their futures.
INCEDES’ goal is a brighter future for Guatemala’s children through education and a healthy living environment, so that they can grow up to reach their goals.
4. “Help Keep Our Children’s Heart Beating” reached a whopping 250% of their goal
Ayuda a Corazón de Niño is committed to making a difference in the lives of children who are born with or develop a heart condition, providing specialized doctors, medical centers, medication, and equipment to diagnose different heart conditions in Baja California Sur, México.
We can’t say thank you enough for the overwhelming sense of Latino generosity on #GivingTuesday!
But it’s not over yet… Let’s keep the #LatinosGive momentum going! Let’s make December the HIPGive month to remember and finish 2016 with a big piñata bang.
There are still many incredible projects to support that are in need of some #LatinosGive love. Here are just a few:
1. Nutrition and Wellbeing for Children with Disabilities in El Salvador
Feed your generosity by helping children with disabilities. Since 1987 The Hogar has set forth a program for abandoned children, adolescents, and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, through specialized care.
2. Champions of Peace
Champions of Peace is a program that prevents Mexican children from entering a life of crime, violence, and drug trafficking, transforming them into champions for change in their own families and communities through boxing,
3. Computer Programming Olympics for Kids
Asociación Civil Edulibre encourages children to raise their level of education and challenge their existing skills by competing against other students in computer animation, using the Scratch program (created by MIT).
4. Investing in our Present and our Future
The Puerto Rico Community Foundation develops communities’ sustainable programs to achieve their social and economic transformation through education.
The Foundation has been committed to supporting education through different approaches, including a teacher’s mini-grant program and implementation of a coaching strategy targeting teachers, principals, parents, and the community.
In the Christmas season don’t forget to be hip and give to HIPGive! You can make a real impact.
