Ecotechnology and clean water for Yucatan families

Yucatán is in the region with the highest water recharge in Mexico, but a large part of its rural population does not have access to water. With the construction of ecotechnologies, hundreds of rural families will improve their living conditions.

The situation

In Mexico, millions of rural people do not have access to clean water, affecting their day-to-day life and their productive activities. In the Yucatan peninsula, the lack of infrastructure has meant that entire communities do not have access to water.
Also, the karst soil (a porous and permeable soil, characteristic of the region) allows waste to reach the acquifer directly if there is no proper waste management, contaminating the environment.
To have access to water, most rural families have to travel distances of around an hour to fetch water (an activity carried out mainly by women). A minority have backyard wells, with which they extract water without treatment and that has been exposed to various pollutants.
In a survey carried out by Educampo into the beneficiaries, we obtained that:
• 59% of families store water in cans and buckets, in which bacteria and parasites easily grow, putting their health at risk, especially in children and the elderly.
• 47% do not have a toilet and 26% use latrines.
• Only 19% have drainage, the rest use septic tanks or do not know what happens to their waste.
• The main form of disinfection is the use of calcitic lime (59%) and 18% do not disinfect it.
• 44% of the beneficiaries have had gastrointestinal diseases in the last months.

The solution: transform lives

With Educampo's Water Sustainability program, 805 rural and indigenous men and women will have access to clean water for themselves and their families, through the construction and appropriation of eco-technologies in 7 localities of Yaxcabá and Tekax, in Yucatán.

With the help of men and women who are beneficiaries of the project, we will build in communities, rainwater collection tanks and water purifiers; while, in homes, we will install water purifiers, dry toilets and sewage treatment channels.
Most of the beneficiary families were previously supported by promoting productive projects in meliponiculture, and they proved to be people with great leadership and initiative.
With your help, we:
• We will deliver 330 construction and installation packages for eco-technologies.
• We will offer workshops to 100% of the beneficiaries to learn how to install, use and maintain eco-technologies.
• We will directly benefit 805 men and women, and indirectly 3,059 boys, girls, adolescents and the elderly.
• We will carry out reforestation with native flora.

Sustainability

In addition to the use of technologies that reduce waste pollution, this project involves the participation of the entire community. By including the beneficiaries in the construction and care of eco-technologies, they make this project their own and ensure its positive impact in the medium and long term.

We need your support

A dignified life requires access to clean water, and in these months of contingency due to Covid-19, the problems due to the lack of access to clean and quality water have become more noticeable. With your help, we will buy construction materials to install eco-techniques and help hundreds of Yucatecan families to improve their health, reduce pollution in water sources and take care of the environment.
