Campaign for COVID-19 Nonprofit relief

While the world watches with concern as COVID-19 sweeps across the globe, it is becoming increasingly clear that the virus is particularly cruel to already-vulnerable communities. As the U.S. demographic group with the lowest level of access to private health care and the lowest proportion of workers able to telework, Latinos are suffering disproportionately in this health crisis.

While physical distancing is an important strategy for preventing infection, 84% of Latino workers cannot work from home, due to high rates of service-based jobs such as food delivery workers, home health and domestic workers, and agricultural workers. This leads to tragic outcomes such as Latinos comprising 34% of COVID-19 deaths in New York City, despite being 29% of its population. The growing virus spread in Mexico and Latin America is poised to be similarly disastrous for their essential workers.

Despite the disproportionate vulnerabilities, essential workers are not receiving a disproportionate level of support to maintain their well-being through the crisis - quite the opposite. Many in our communities are being left without any financial support or assistance to combat the virus and its ripple effects.

Our “essential workers” don’t have the essentials—like healthcare benefits, paid time off, unemployment benefits, housing protection, or federal/state stimulus support—to survive. Small nonprofits are stepping in to address this gap that our governments fail to fill, and they need our help providing direct relief to the communities they serve.

As an emergency response to the unprecedented need resulting from COVID-19, HIPGive is joining #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5, 2020, in a global day of giving and unity.

Now more than ever our Latino communities across the Americas need us and the role of nonprofits is critically urgent to support the most vulnerable through the crisis by providing food security, financial assistance, funerary support and more.

Small, local nonprofits are working diligently to provide assistance to those who risk their lives picking our food, cleaning our streets and hospitals, stocking our supermarkets - and another work society depends on. On this Giving Tuesday, we want these organizations and the communities they serve to know that they can depend on us too. By donating $5 USD, you can help support nonprofits who are providing immediate relief to essential workers and vulnerable communities most affected by the pandemic.
