Our story

Since 2009, Voces y Manos has been working to empower youth leaders in Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala to become leaders in their communities. Through high school and college scholarships, social justice leadership training, work-study internships, and opportunities to conduct community projects and engage in advocacy, graduates of Voces y Manos enact transformative change in their communities and beyond.

Each year, Voces y Manos students work in small groups to investigate a challenge their community is facing and design a project with the guidance of Voces y Manos staff to address that issue. This year, the issue of focus was climate change-fueled drought, which is having a devastating impact on farmers’ ability to sustain themselves on their land. To address this issue, youth in Voces y Manos conducted in-depth interviews with members of their communities to learn about ancestral practices and ways of life that are key to climate change adaptation and environmental protection. Over the course of the next three years, Voces y Manos youth will work with families to help them implement agricultural practices that are culturally and ecologically sustainable.

Part of Voces y Manos’ commitment to supporting the youth who conduct this powerful work is to help provide them with the resources they need to attend and graduate from high school, and subsequently, to attend college. Unfortunately, the costs of supplies, tuition, and uniforms can make school unattainable for many families in Rabinal. So, we are asking for your support to help raise the funds necessary to provide our students with potentially life-changing scholarships.

To support our students and cover operating costs for the remainder of the year, we need to your help to raise $6,000.

By helping us reach this fundraising goal, you’ll be playing an important role in creating opportunities for future leaders to creating healthier, thriving communities. Your contributions – in any amount you are able — are deeply appreciated and will absolutely make a difference.

Who is implementing this project?

This Project is being implemented by Voces y Manos, a youth development organization that uses the methodologies of youth participatory action research (YPAR) to help young people learn to identify important issues in their communities, analyze root causes of those issues, and organize their community to address them. Voces y Manos works in close partnership with its Guatemalan parent organization, Fundación Nueva Esperanza, which operates a school that provides bilingual (Spanish/Mayan), culturally relevant education to children whose parents survived the violent, state-sponsored genocide against the Mayan population in the 1980s. Over the course of their 10-year collaboration, Voces y Manos and Fundación Nueva Esperanza have provided over 70 high school scholarships, 10 college scholarships and overseen the implementation of more than 20 youth-led community projects. By supporting Voces y Manos, you are supporting youth from indigenous communities in their journey to become empowered community leaders.

Our students thank you for your support!

I am grateful to support Michael in his wonderful vision and dedication to these young people. I remember when he came to my door 10 years ago to inform me of Voces y Manos, and I invited him in to tell me more about it. Of course I contributed after seeing his dedication and clear plan to help young people. And I am very happy to do so again. Thank you Michael and the entire Voces y Manos team!
