COVID-19 Initiative: Emergency Relief for the Bay of Banderas, Mexico

Ensuring everyone in the Bay of Banderas is able to live healthily and with dignity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our story

The Need

In the tourism-based economy of the Riviera Nayarit region of Mexico, where Human Connections (HC) is headquartered, tens of thousands of residents have lost their income since the onset of COVID-19. Closed markets, beaches, and plazas mean many informal vendors and artisans don’t have a point of sale and their income has been reduced to almost zero. For our local artisan and entrepreneur partners who rely on travelers and public spaces to sell their products, meeting basic needs has become near impossible.

The Project

Even in this time of social distancing and restricted travel, the HC team is developing socially responsible ways to virtually (and safely) bring international audiences and our local partners together — while also generating much-needed income for our partners.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, HC has pivoted our programs to providing critical relief to our partners and their families and establishing new initiatives that multiply our relief efforts. Our multifaceted response includes:

  • Providing emergency financial stipends to partners in need
  • Spearheading projects that generate family-sustaining work for partners
  • Adapting our day tour program to a virtual platform so we can continue to foster authentic, reciprocal cross-cultural experiences accessible to everyone

We wholeheartedly believe channeling resources to our community is the most ethical and empathic way to mitigate the unprecedented effects of this crisis.

How You Can Help

On May 5, 2020 — aka #GivingTuesdayNow — Human Connections has a goal of raising $1,500 that will be channeled into economic relief activities that directly support our partners’ livelihoods. And to sweeten the deal? On May 5 only, Hispanics in Philanthropy will offer a 1:1 match on a first-come, first serve basis, which means that if we reach our goal of $1,500 we could really raise up to $3,000. Here are some ways you can give back:

  • If you’re able, we encourage you to make a contribution to our campaign. No donation is too small!
  • Share the campaign with your family, friends, and colleagues. Give us a shout out on social media, send a direct ask via email, or even casually mention our #GivingTuesdayNow campaign on your Tuesday Zoom calls.
  • Join our email newsletter and stay updated on HC projects and ways to get involved.

With your generosity, HC can be a source of strength, stability, and security for our partners and the larger Bucerías community to weather this storm with good health and dignity.

More About Human Connections

Headquartered in Bucerías, Mexico, a small beach town on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Human Connections is a non-profit that connects local people with international audiences through travel programs and curated experiences. Our goal is to empower local communities while fostering conversations that shift perspectives and increase understanding. Through a vibrant network of local partners – Mexican artisans, tradespeople, and organizations – HC creates opportunities for authentic, meaningful exchanges. These local partners have a platform to share their culture, have agency over their stories, and generate increased income. Concurrently, travelers gain an increased understanding of Mexican culture while cultivating more empathetic perspectives about Mexico.
