Gender Equity = Immigrant Justice

Donate to support NMILC’s work towards gender equity and immigrant justice!

New Mexico Immigrant Law Center

Gender Equality

Our story

The New Mexico Immigrant Law Center’s mission is to advance justice and equity by empowering low-income immigrant communities through collaborative legal services, advocacy, and education. Through our work, we build opportunity for gender equity in the field of immigration law in addition to opening paths to legal status for immigrant community members, including women from all immigrant backgrounds.

NMILC’s legal team provides free legal services for various forms of humanitarian based immigration relief. Some of the main forms of relief are availble to immigrant survivors of crime, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking survivors, which accounted for 74% of our team’s clients in 2019. Visas like the U visa and T visa were created to encourage immigrant survivors of violent crime and trafficking to come forward rather than live in fear of removal. Immigrant women face increased risk of crime and trafficking, due to limited work authorization, uncertain legal status, language and cultural barriers, and lack of access to information about their rights. This is why our services are so important, and we need your help to fund them!

$2000 helps fund one U visa case.

A small donation of $5 makes a huge impact to help us fund direct representation for U visa clients!

Donate today to help an immigrant survivor of a crime on their path towards legal status!

One example of the importance of such work is Brenda’s* case. NMILC staff has been working with Brenda on her U Visa since 2014, as well as representing her in removal proceedings during that same period. She is a victim of domestic violence by her partner. In addition to representing her case, our attorneys have been accompanying her to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) check-in. We filed her U Visa application in 2014, and it was finally approved in March 2019. Through our services, she and her children have obtained social security numbers, which increases their stability and access to benefits. Brenda also now has lawful work authorization and is therefore able to apply for more job opportunities. She also has a one-year-old child who is a US citizen, so we are working to terminate her deportation proceedings so that she will not be separated from her child.

Fellowship Programs Advancing Equity

Another integral aspect of NMILC’s mission is our fellowship program. The Next Generation of Social Justice Legal Professionals is a “pipeline” project to increase the representation of historically marginalized communities in the legal profession. NMILC also offers part-time internships during the fall, spring, and summer, which create opportunities that support students on their pre-law paths earlier in their careers during high school and college. These internships are designed to reduce financial barriers, support students in their personal and professional development, and create greater access to social justice lawyering careers. Most recently, NMILC fellows and interns have been women with personal or family backgrounds with the US immigration system, some of whom are also mothers, working towards their careers in law. NMILC fellows and interns are mentored by other women in the legal field as part of the program’s design, since NMILC’s staff is comprised of mostly women. These women use their experiences as fellows to propel their careers and shape the legal field.

By designing these programs with the input of the NMILC staff and community, NMILC has empowered women who have personal experience with the immigration system to take control of the systemic, legal, and political forces that affect their lives and the lives of their clients. YOU can fund an NMILC fellow! Even just a $5 helps us fund interns and fellows to set them on paths towards social justice lawyering!

Along with our community, NMILC leads the way to creating a vibrant New Mexico where all people–regardless of immigration status and gender–can achieve their full potential and gain access to equitable futures.
