Guest Speakers PLUS ME

Support PLUS ME in bringing dynamic individuals to share their unique paths to success to students in schools and organizations.

the PLUS ME project

Our story

Do you recall that person in high school that came into your classroom or a setting where you were at and motivated you to continue with your higher education? Yes, that person that made you realize that you did have career goals and wanted to be someone in life. Our Guest Speakers Plus ME feature program brings individuals into schools to share their obstacles and triumphs that they’ve encountered throughout their academic and social lives. Furthermore, our program allows students to think outside of their everyday lifestyle to dream big, think of their aspirations and begin creating a roadmap to their successful future, even if that is only mentally at that time. The work doesn’t end there because though students have only started thinking about their future after our presentations, we encourage them to stay connected with us and our speakers in our supportive social networks. We commit to lifelong and encouraging relationships with them. The best part about our program is that the majority of the students will relate to the speaker because their background and upbringing will be very similar if not identical to theirs. We will reach and impact over 3,000 students with our Guest Speakers PLUE ME project from over 15 schools in underserved areas of Los Angeles. Your support will change and impact the lives of over 3,000 students because they will connect and hear narratives from people that have the same background as theirs, which will only give them the self-confidence and academic tenacity necessary to continue succeeding in life. Today’s youth lives and breathes social media and we’ve taken this into account, therefore they will always find a positive online community to gain daily inspiration and learn from each other on our social media networks.

Why it matters?

Students need realistic role models that they can relate to and learn from. By providing motivational presentations to schools in low-income communities that cannot afford motivational outreach, we are bringing hope and inspiration to students in the Latino community from members of our community. We will conduct pre and post surveys at all of our school visits with each student we speak to. In these surveys, we will focus on how motivated they currently are in school, how much effort they are putting into their schooling, and how confident they are in reaching their goals. With multiple presenters visiting a school throughout the school year, students will hear from a diverse group of role models that they can connect with and learn from. This will ultimately aim at increasing their motivation towards pursing post-secondary education and academic success. This will benefit the Latino community because more positive Latina/o role models will be presented to students.

How will the funds be used?

Our goal is to impact 15 schools within this project. We will send 3 different PLUS ME presenters to each school throughout the school year. These funds will pay the stipends for each presenter that will visit and speak to over 3,000 students. We will conduct 45 school visits to complete the funds received for this project. The additional funds will be used towards our outreach campaign to select and get the 15 schools on board with our program. If we do not reach our entire goal, we will use the raised amount to reach out to as many schools that we can.
Help us spread word about this project through your own social media accounts and by following us on our accounts!

The team

Richard Reyes

Richard’s unique narrative has inspired over 30,000 students in and around the L.A. area. He describes the various academic and social struggles he faced while attending public K-12 schooling in the Los Angeles Unified School District, bringing students into his world and taking them on an exhilarating journey.

As the first in his family to attend college, Richard’s journey focuses on lessons he learned while attending North Hollywood HS, Glendale Community College, and Occidental College, where he earned his BA in Critical Theory/Social Justice in 2011. He concludes the narrative of his educational journey at California State University Los Angeles, where he completed his Master of Arts degree in Education.

Richard’s story is a presentation designed to motivate students to take steps outside their comfort zones, encourage them to remain positive about their education, and remind them that they can accomplish their dreams.

Ailyana Barrera

Presenter

Ailyana is a firm believer and advocate of education, uniquely motivated by the underrepresentation of Latina women in the international business world. Growing up as a Guatemalan American in Southern California, Ailyana understands the vast need to support and motivate minority students to continue with higher education.

Self-confidence and stepping out of her comfort zone were some of the challenges Ailyana faced while attending Littlerock High School in Palmdale, California.  As an example, she provides the unforgettable moments about her study abroad experiences and how this allowed her to explore the world while building self-confidence, knowledge, and a unique opportunity to learn about herself.

Ailyana graduated Cum Laude from California State University, Northridge with a BA in Languages and Cultures. Furthermore, she went on to pursue an MBA in International Business at Keller Graduate School of Management and graduated with Distinction.

Jimmy Recinos

Jimmy knows full well how difficult it can be for students in L.A. to succeed in school. After all, though he started as a freshman at John Marshall High in 2004, he was transferred across three different high schools throughout LAUSD before finally returning to Marshall late during his Junior year in 2007. After graduating in 2008, Jimmy enrolled at Pasadena City College and later transferred to UC Davis, where he earned his BA in English Language and Literature in 2014.

Now, as a recent college graduate, Jimmy’s out to share one key message with today’s youth: that everyone, regardless of their background or the adversities they face, can attend and succeed in college.

By tracing the roots of his adversities as a high school student onto his achievements during college, Jimmy’s story highlights how a little bit of motivation can go a long way, ultimately creating a better life at home, within the community, and of course, as a part of the city of Los Angeles!

Morgan Cox

Presenter

Over the past 6 years, Morgan has conducted powerful presentations for tens of thousands of students. She weaves her experiences, from the scholastic to the personal and professional, to create a tapestry of collective lessons for life.

Through her stories of successes and missteps, lessons emerge that focus on the importance of realizing and nurturing passions early on, understanding failure is not a permanent condition, and that all things are possible when you face the world with positivity and true self confidence. Her presentation will relate to students, motivate them and ultimately educate them from a unique perspective.

Morgan attended Hamilton Academy of Music High school followed by Pomona College where she graduated in 2004 with a BA in Politics and Black Studies.

Richard Kuo

Growing up convinced he was an overweight, unintelligent, and good-for-nothing child, Richard lived much of his early life with low self-esteem and little confidence towards succeeding in school and life. His narrative focuses on how he overcame his internal struggles and found the courage to trust himself in making his own life-changing decisions. Recently, Richard quit his 9-5 job to pursue his dream of being a youth motivational speaker, life coach, and Youtuber.

Today, Richard uses his story to empower thousands of students around the world by sharing the idea of how one simple shift in their mindsets has the ability to transform their entire life. Richard’s presentation is designed to inspire and provide the space for students to realize that everything that they need to achieve their dreams is inside of them already; not something that is external.

Richard attended Fountain Valley High School and later graduated Cum Laude from the University of California, Riverside with a BS in Business Administration in 2011.
