Help us support Mohammed

The pandemic crisis urges us to take care of each other in the community. Please help a neighbor asylum seeker in Mexico.

Our story

The pandemic may have forced us to socially distance ourselves from our neighbors, but it has not dimmed the human desire in all of us to help those of our neighbors who are struggling during this frightening time.

We met Mohammed, an asylum seeker from a transcontinental region across the ocean, in Tijuana’s local mosque, where he shared his story of government persecution in his home country for his firmly held political beliefs towards the defense of freedom. While thousands of asylum seekers pass through Tijuana on their way to seek asylum in the United States, Mohammed has decided that he wants to make México his home, and has with the help of Alma Migrante, begun the process to seek international refugee protection here in Tijuana.

As a result of the pandemic, the processing of asylum applications and work permits for asylum seekers has slowed to a halt. Mohammed is not able to legally work to support his most basic needs. As his attorneys, we feel it is our moral responsibility to help not only with defending his right to be free from persecution but to help see him through this crisis. Mohammed is now a member of our México community and our border region, and in times of struggle, it is only through working together as a community that we can rise to the challenge of protecting the most vulnerable members.

We are seeking to raise 2,350 dollars to cover Mohammed´s housing and food costs for five months, as he still owes the rent for the months of April and May. Mohammed too is working hard to invest and integrate into his community. He is learning Spanish and is involved in the local mosque, while he awaits his work permit. He also has an offer of employment waiting for him, but it is contingent upon him receiving his work permit.

We are confident that as our neighbor, Mohammed has so much to contribute. Let us welcome and support our community, and act collectively to make a difference in the life of one of its newest members. Without our support, Mohammed will be homeless, which will present very real challenges as Mohammed is not yet fluent in Spanish. Any amount counts! Every dollar makes the difference!

*** Any amounts raised in excess of the targeted amount will be donated to organizations supporting local families in the COVID-19 crisis. If alternatively, you can help with his food in kind please let us know.
