This public health crisis has devastated the lives of immigrant families and workers disproportionately. This crisis will have immediate and generational consequences. NICE is committed to continue at your side with love and support, #NICEUnidos #TogetherWeWill protect our way forward.
New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is a nonprofit organization that has dedicated more than 20 years to improving the lives of vulnerable immigrant families in New York- with a focus on day laborers, domestic workers, and recently arrived immigrants. We offer a comprehensive suite of services, community organizing, and leadership development programs. The current public health crisis has devastated the lives of immigrant families and workers, leaving an already overburdened population with few or no resources and support to weather this storm. The ramifications of the pandemic will also have lasting generational consequences that must be mitigated in the short and long term.
In the wake of the pandemic, NICE immediately pivoted to rapid response programming to meet the vast and often dire needs of our community- from the epicenter of this crisis- Queens, NY.
NICE is committed to responding and supporting the immediate basic vital needs of our community to survive and overcome. Including the rights, protections and needs of the hundreds of thousands immigrant essential workers – on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic- construction workers, delivery workers, drivers, health care personnel and more.
As part of our NICE Action rapid response campaign- NICE launched a Food Access initiative upon surveying the current community environment- basic physiological needs including basic food needs have been growing exponentially.
While not traditionally a part of NICE programming, we at NICE are in a unique front-line position with our community and have been able to make a significant impact:
- providing basic food needs directly- with food deliveries to homes and access to food pickups at NICE Jackson Heights location with support from World Central Kitchen, Sophie Cuban Cuisine, GrowNYC, Fresh Direct, New York Mets, Aramark and more.
- advocating for increased access to food.
- developing partnerships in a way that will provide further economic development for our members, community, local restaurants and businesses.
NICE has pushed forward in provide rapid relief cash assistance to community via support from foundations and partners- to date directly distributing thousands in relief.
NICE has provided direct support for families that have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 crisis, coordinating with consulates and identifying support/funding for families.
Your support with help NICE’s overall Covid-19 crisis response efforts, in the immediate term and in the longer term as we are committed to be here for you now, through this crisis, and after this crisis.
