Seeds of Success: Empowering Future Latina Science Leaders

Empowering girls to become leaders in science through mentoring, skills development and community impact.

Ciencia Puerto Rico

Children and Youth

Our story

Latinas earn 4% of bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM disciplines, and hold only 2% of jobs in these sectors in the U.S. Gender stereotypes and a lack of visible female role models, mentors, and early exposure to STEM contribute to this problem. Latinas’ low representation in STEM limits their earning potential and participation in a fast-growing career sector, and is a troubling loss of talent and innovation.

Help us empower Latinas in STEM by supporting Ciencia Puerto Rico’s Seeds of Success program!

Since 2015, Seeds of Success has promoted the participation of Latinas in STEM by connecting middle and high school girls in Puerto Rico with Latina STEM role models and by giving them opportunities to experience STEM through workshops in research and university settings. Participants become STEM Ambassadors by completing STEM-based community outreach projects that reach thousands of additional people. Girls leave our program with higher interest in STEM careers and college majors, and most importantly, with higher self-regard as leaders and confidence in their STEM abilities. To date, Seeds of Success has benefited 250 girls throughout Puerto Rico and they in turn have reached more than 13,000 additional children and members of the public!

How YOU Can Help

Your support will allow us to:

  • Add a workshop site (increasing them from two to three) to reach more girls from underserved non-urban regions and go from 80 participants in 2019 to 120 in 2020.
  • Fund mini-grants to help participating girls implement creative and impactful STEM Ambassador projects that are expected to reach more than 4,000 additional people.
  • Host an exciting closing ceremony where STEM professionals and the girls’ families and teachers celebrate their accomplishments and where girls will be able to exhibit their outreach projects and learn more about STEM careers and college opportunities.

The impact of your donation will be amplified through a collaboration with IF/THEN Ambassadors, high-profile women STEM experts selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Lyda Hill Philanthropies as national role models for middle school girls. This collaboration will allow us to reach thousands of additional girls through the public webinar series “Juntas Podemos” with Latina IF/THEN Ambassadors and by leveraging the media relations of the IF/THEN Program to give Seeds of Success’ participants and their outreach projects higher visibility. Some of the IF/THEN Ambassadors—along with other female STEM professionals from the CienciaPR network—will also participate as role models in the workshops and allow us to incorporate topics such as coding, chemistry, microbiology and math.

With your help, Seeds of Success 2020 will boost girls’ interests towards STEM fields, allow them to see themselves as scientists, and increase their confidence in their STEM abilities and self-regard as leaders. Together, we will give Latina girls the agency to break the glass ceiling and become the women leaders in STEM of the future!

About Us

Seeds of Success is a program of Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), a nonprofit dedicated to democratizing science and transforming science education. To achieve this, CienciaPR engages and empowers a diverse global community of more than 12,000 scientists, students, educators and allies who understand that science and critical thinking gives people the knowledge, capacity and agency to improve their lives and society. Since 2006, the organization has published more than 600 mass media articles written by Puerto Rican scientists; has trained ~200 young scientists in professional development and leadership skills through the Yale Ciencia Academy; has connected 250 girls in Puerto Rico with female role models in science and technology through Seeds of Success; and has facilitated collaborations between scientists and teachers for the development of pertinent and effective science lessons through Ciencia al Servicio (Science in Service), impacting the education of thousands of students throughout Puerto Rico. These efforts Have resulted in multiple awards, including being named a “Bright Spot” in Hispanic education by the White House in 2015 and “Defenders of Science” by the Union of Concerned Scientists in 2018.
